General Information
The Relais il Fienile is elegant, welcoming and environment-friendly, an ideal base for those seeking peace, good taste and comfort but wishing also to explore the many - and as yet largely undiscovered - riches offered by the Casentino: scenery, touring and trekking, history, religion, art, artisan work, and shopping.
The building (an old barn restructured with traditional materials - local stone, exposed wooden beams, Florentine terracotta) is surrounded by a green, tree-lined park, a swimming pool, a large car-park, and several acres of estate. On the ground floor there are the reception rooms (a portico, sitting rooms for chatting or simply relaxing in, a dining and breakfast room). On the other floors there are the guests bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and each tastefully and simply decorated.
The Relais il Fienile follows a formula akin to that of the French Relais and the English Country House. A formula consisting of five basic ingredients: Character, Courtesy, Calm, Charm, Cuisine. In an environment where special attention is given to service and hospitality, the owners live in the house alongside their guests, serving a breakfast of homemade produce and, on request, dining with them at a ""table dhôte"" - an opportunity for pleasurable conversation, which may well extend into the evening before the flames of an ancient fireplace.
The Relais il Fienile is therefore the ideal place for anyone seeking quiet and discreet hospitality, a charming atmosphere, quality comfort in a family setting and at a particularly favourable price.
The bedrooms all have panoramic views and each has been given the name of the village or mountain it overlooks (Poppi, Bibbiena, Pratomagno, Camaldoli etc.).
The rooms vary in size in order to meet guests different needs.
All the furniture consists of period pieces bought over the years at the many antique shops in the region.
Special attention is given to breakfast: homemade cakes and marmalades and ... daily surprises according to the season and ... the whim of the hostess!
So if you want to have dinner in the Relais and you are a company tell it in advance to Zizì she will be glad to prepare for you. Dining with us offers the chance of getting to know the owners of the Fienile, round the dinner table in a room warmed by the furnishings but also by the conversation.
The menu offers traditional Italian regional cooking: meat dishes, fish dishes and homegrown vegetables. Nature declares itself in every dish: the ingredients are all genuine, the flavours all authentic.
The Relais il Fienile is situated in an exceptionally beautiful part of the Casentino, about 550 metres above sea level with a magnificent view of the massifs of the Pratomagno and Alpe di Catenaia and of the upper valley of the Arno.
The Relais il Fienile is about 5 km from the historic town of Bibbiena, on the road leading to the medieval village of Gressa, in an ideal spot, not just for its magnificent panoramic position, a typical feature of barns, but also for its proximity to many centres of historical, artistic, scenic and religious interest:
10 km (10 min.) from Poppi, a beautiful little town of particular interest by virtue of the famous castle of the Conti Guidi, one of Tuscanys best conserved medieval buildings.
15 km (15 min.) from the castle and Romanesque church of Romena.
18 km (30 min.) from the sanctuary of La Verna, a Franciscan monastery par excellence and an object of constant pilgrimage, which houses the worlds finest majolica, fashioned by the hands of the Della Robbia family.
In no time at all (half an hour at the most) other highly interesting places are within reach: Arezzo, with its masterpieces by Piero della Francesca and Cimabue; the historic villages of Pratovecchio and Stia, with its thermal waters, and the convent and sacred hermitage of Camaldoli.
For sports lovers, the immediate surroundings offer:
a livery stable with a riding school and pony trekking facilities (1 km).
a lake for fishing (1 km).
Casentino Golf Club at Poppi (10 km).
tennis courts and an indoor swimming pool at Bibbiena.
The Relais il Fienile, moreover, lies on the edge of the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, the most extensive virgin forest in Italy.

coming from Arezzo (32 km, 30 mins.), and from Central South Italy in general, via State Highway S.S. 71 Umbro-Casentinese.
coming from Florence (60 km, 60 mins.), and from the North-West in general, via State Highway S.S. 70 Consuma, or from the Valdarno over the Crocina pass, or else via Arezzo.
coming from Romagna (about 30 km from Bagno di Romagna), and from the North-East in general, once again via State Highway S.S. 71 and crossing the Mandrioli pass.
coming from the Mugello, via State Highway S.S. 556 through Londa.
