The province of Arezzo can in many ways be said to epitomize the artistic, historical and natural beauty of Tuscany
The province of Arezzo can in many ways be said to epitomize the artistic, historical and natural beauty of Tuscany - one of the best known and most loved regions on the world tourism map.The provincial capital Arezzo is an ancient town whose greatest claim to fame is arguably the fresco cycle painted there by Piero della Francesca in the 15th century. But we should not allow our admiration of this artistic masterpiece to eclipse the many other testimonies of Arezzo's history, be they from the days of the medieval commune or from the town's Roman and indeed its Etruscan past.
The countryside around Arezzo is dotted with a whole host of other small towns and villages rich in charm and character, Cortona, Castiglion Fiorentino, Sansepolcro, Monte San Savino, San Giovanni Valdarno and the tiny Cennina being among the best known. Feudal castles abound, as do isolated Romanesque and early medieval churches, while historical sites such as the Verna Sanctuary and the Camaldoli Hermitage are places of intense spirituality. This, in turn, reminds us that the province is also crossed by what were once major pilgrimage routes.
